I have been researching Valentine Dudensing and the Valentine Gallery since 1995 when I was a graduate student at Hunter College, CUNY. A chance discovery of the gallery's sales records (now in MoMA's Archives) in the collection of Dudensing's grandson led to the long-term project of identifying the works that the dealer sold during the two decades that his gallery was in business. To date I have identified over 300 paintings, drawings, and sculptures -- many of which are seminal works -- that came through the Valentine Gallery and are now in U.S. museum collections.
I am actively seeking information on works that were sold through the gallery and, in exchange, will share whatever provenance information the sales records might include. In addition I welcome feedback and general questions about Dudensing and the Valentine Gallery.
